[2958] Dr. Rinehart Handy Hog Holder

Embossed,"DR. RINEHART HANDY HOG HOLDER PAT NOV 24 1931", this cast iron Hog Holder is 21 ½ inches long.
We have been told that you can't lead a hog. This was put over the hog's snout and then it was backed up. One end is for large hogs - one end is for small hogs. We're sure this was, indeed, very "handy"...
especially if you had a 300 lb. hog to back up !

"PAT FEB 16 92" is embossed on one side. This 1880's cast iron Harness Hook was used in the barn to hold the draft horses' heavy wagon harness. Over 100 years old, the hook is in excellent condition and has "sprue" marks on some of its edges. (This is where the iron seeped out of the mold. These marks are usually ground off at the foundry. Some people collect tools with sprue marks.) You can see a faint line down the center of the back: the piece was cast in two parts and then welded together and then the rough weld was ground smooth.
The side with the hooks is 17 inches long. The hook protrudes 11 inches from the wall. We like hooks like these because they are very usable !
